Tropical Flowers From Thailand!

Colourful Flower Inspiration

I have just arrived back from my summer break, except for it happened in winter. Summer holidays aren’t really permitted when you are a wedding florist and to be honest I’m quite alright with that. Brighton is a lovely place to be when the sun is shining and the weather is warm, we have the beach and loads of lovely green parks. But a lovely place in January it is not, howling winds and horizontal rain has been the main feature this winter and it felt pretty fabulous to be jetting off to Thailand for two weeks for some sun and relaxation.

Don’t worry I’m not going to subject you to all of my holiday snaps, I’m going to try and keep this relevant and fill your screens with beautiful flowers and colours!

Tropical wedding flowers

So who is having a destination wedding full of beautiful tropical flowers? Thailand is an amazing place with really wonderful welcoming people and did I mention more orchids than you could ever wish for!

Of course I made sure we took a trip to Pak Klong Talad – Bangkok Flower Market  I just couldn’t believe the abundance of orchids, there were huge overflowing baskets full (I wanted to dive in…)

Everywhere you turned there were people making dainty little arrangements and garlands to be taken as offerings to the Buddhist temples.

Yellow Oncidium Orchid - Golden shower

More orchids just growing naturally in the garden. I love using this variety, they look fabulous in wedding bouquets and arrangements and give a great pop of colour.

Obligatory cheesy photo of me and the orchids.

I hope these pictures have brought some sunshine into dreary February for you. Now time to plan the next trip…..

Dusky Pink and Burgundy Flowers for a Hove Wedding

Vintage Style Wedding Flowers

Liza and Mark’s wedding back in August this year was such a joy to work on. The wedding ceremony itself was held at The Claremont Hove and the reception at The Hove Club. It was such a stylish affair with every little design detail thought out making the whole day a feast for the eyes. Well what do you expect from the owners of a stylish interiors and homeware shop?! (Their new store Homeage is opening in Brighton very soon, yay!)

Flowers were gorgeous dusky pink and burgundy tones with plenty of scented summer blooms and soft seasonal foliages.

Photos by Naomi Fowler Weddings

Hove beach huts looking lovely, the pastel ice cream shades work really nicely with the bridesmaids different coloured dresses.

Below, a close up of the bridesmaids bouquets. I loved using this colour palette, the rich burgundy red roses against dusky pinks and silvery eucalyptus. I used beautiful English lisianthus with blackberries, eupatorium and mini alliums alongside asparagus fern to create lots of lovely contrasts of textures.

Table centres were small posies of flowers in stylish geometric vases provided by Liza and Mark, it’s a really nice change for me to work with more unusual vases.

The photo below is my favourite, the colours are so fabulous with the blue hydrangea in the background perfectly complimenting Liza’s necklace and the purples in her bridal bouquet.

Whilst setting up at The Hove Club I met this dude, sunning himself on the wall looking pretty relaxed!

Beautiful Blue Wedding Flowers

Embracing blue as your colour theme and choosing those blue wedding flowers.

I thought I’d do something a little different this time and focus on a colour rather than flower type or season. Colour is everywhere and although we probably don’t notice in everyday life, we are constantly choosing products and making decisions based on colour. It has long been believed that colours have a huge impact on our moods and overall well being. So with that in mind why not give a thought to your wedding colours and the kind of mood you’d like to convey. The beauty of blue is that it can be elegant, sophisticated and subtle for a classic traditional style wedding or it can be bold, playful and fun for a more relaxed affair.

Blue is a colour thought to represent calmness and serenity and is often described as peaceful, tranquil and relaxing. It also is a colour of trust, honesty and loyalty – pretty key factors in a lasting marriage!

Each season has it’s own blue flowers. Whilst Summer has a larger selection and some real true blues on offer, Spring, Autumn and Winter have their fair share too. Some of my favourite summer blues you can see above, Delphinium and Agapanthus and Hydrangea below. Artichoke (pictured below left) is a fabulous way to include some texture and structure to your arrangements, they are big, bold and create quite an impact!

Blue is a very versatile colour and works nicely with other colours, paired with lilacs, dusky pinks and silver foliages such as Eucalyptus and Dusty Miller it can look beautifully subtle and elegant. Teaming bold blue with oranges and yellows can make a fabulous impact if you’re looking to brighten things up.

Autumn Flowers

Awesome Colourful Autumn!

Although I’m always sad to see the summer go I do get a bit excited about Autumn and it’s crisp mornings and beautiful rich red hues. I love the Autumn spices – even after being completely overloaded on pumpkin spiced everything whilst in Washington DC for a month last October! Spiced pumpkin beer is a favourite of mine – yep that’s a thing! Look at these fabulous Dahlias below, some of my very favourite Autumn flowers.

As for flowers, Autumn has some real treats to offer and you definitely won’t be short of options for your wedding flowers – Euphorbia, rich red hydrangeas, Physalis (Chinese Lanterns) Oak foliage, Crocosmia, Dahlia, Rosehips, Viburnum berries, Rudbeckia and Scabiosa pods to name but a few. Autumn has a wealth of rich colours and textures which are great fun to work with and to be able to use spikey twiggy branches and berries in arrangements makes a real change from the soft and fluffy pastel shades of the Summer.

Feast your eyes on some Autumn treats below, these delicious photos are total 100% guilt free pleasure and all taken either at work or on my travels. Enjoy!

Ruth and Greg’s tropical disco theme wedding flowers

Summer brights in Barcombe!

I love all the weddings I do as each and every one is individually special. It is lovely the way that flowers can add extra personality to an event and everyone’s personalities are a different. So when a wedding like Ruth and Greg’s comes along it is extra exciting as their style choice was right up my street! I don’t need to be asked twice to go for it with tropical style colours and flowers! I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of this wedding, from choosing which bright and fabulous blooms to fill the tropical fruit tins to setting up on a beautiful summers day with retro 90’s dance tunes blasting out of the sound system whilst they tested it all out (it was definitely working!)

Here’s a few pictures for you to enjoy from their day to help you remember the beautiful Summer which seems like so long ago now it’s raining and Autumnal!

I used a mix of bright flowers with a Tropical feel to them including one of my favourites, Sandersonia (the Chinese lantern style flower) which I don’t get to work with very often. There’s asclepsia, dendrobium orchid, zinnias, asparagus fern, antirrhinum, germini and hot pink carnations in these cool tins.

I love the simple stylish bridesmaids dresses paired with their colourful wrist corsages.

The Anchor Inn (near Lewes) is such a beautiful venue, I love how you can go boating on your wedding day!

What a lovely couple. Congratulations Ruth and Greg!

Summer Sunflower Sussex Wedding

A Beautiful August Wedding at Crockstead Farm, Sussex

August weddings are popular there’s no doubt about it – who wouldn’t want to get married on a sunny summers day?! Sadly the English weather doesn’t always cooperate, in fact sometimes it seems very confused about what season we’re in! But I’m happy to say Sami and Nick’s wedding on August 9th was the most gloriously sunny day – hurrah! It was such a pleasure working at the beautiful Crockstead Farm Hotel – the grounds were so peaceful!

Sami and Nick chose a burnt orange and red colour palette to compliment their favourite flower – the sunflower! I was able to make the most of the lovely seasonal summer flowers available such as, Dahlias and Zinnias (my favourites!)

English Country Garden Wedding

Beautiful Wedding Flowers

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of working with one of my florist buddies who I met whilst working at Gardenia in Wimbledon. One of her best mates married in the most beautiful setting in Kent which just happened to be the family home. We filled the marquee and church with beautiful English country garden blooms which had the most amazing scents. We made the arrangements in a stable and even had a tractor and trailer to transport our creations – it’s not often that I can say that! I can’t take credit for the designs, they were thought up by the clever Serena but I helped make and put it all together so thought I’d share some snaps for you all to see. It was such a pleasure to work with such beautiful flowers in such an amazing setting and for such lovely people. I hope this gives you some inspiration if you are planning an English country garden style wedding.

My favourite alternative wedding flowers

5 alternative wedding flower ideas

I wanted to write a little post about flowers that get a bit forgotten about in the world of weddings. There are such strong trends within the wedding industry and you see the same flowers and colours featured time and time again. Of course there is nothing wrong with being a little more traditional with your wedding but if you do want to try something a little different then hopefully this post will help. There are so many wonderfully creative folk doing their wedding their way. So with this in mind, I present to you my favourite alternative wedding flowers. Little beauties that maybe get overlooked for the ‘fashionable’ and ‘weddingy’ flowers that are being suggested by mainstream magazines and blogs.

1. Daffodils

The humble daffodil. This beautiful and uplifting flower often gets forgotten about for weddings and why I will never know! It is sunny, happy, grown in England and also (a nice bonus) cheap as chips! Available in late Winter and through Spring these beauties work well en masse but also look great mixed with your other favourite spring flower.

2. Dahlias

Dahlias are one of my absolute favourite flowers. Available throughout summer and well into Autumn they make the perfect addition to any celebration. One of the things I love about them is the variety, not only of colour but of shape and structure. If you love bright bold and mis-matched there is a dahlia for almost every colour you can imagine! If you are more subtle then they come in a beautiful variety of pale whites creams and pastels. Oh and did I mention they are also really good value? What’s not to love?!

3. Amaryllis

Although traditionally seen as a Christmas flower, I think the Amaryllis has a lot more to offer us throughout spring. The price of a tall, 4 headed stem of Amaryllis is actually similar to that of one single large rose or a peony…makes you think doesn’t it? You need far fewer stems to fill a vase and can create the most stunning and visually impressive arrangements with relatively little money compared to other flowers. Just remember to make sure you allow enough time for them to open…they aren’t quite such a spectacle when they are closed! A few days should suffice.

4. Chincherichee

I love these bright little flowers and they have the most amazingly long vase life – we’re talking several weeks here! They also last extremely well out of water making them a good choice for buttonholes, corsages and hair pieces. They are also available in a long stem white headed variety which works perfectly for more chic and minimal decor, the tiny heads have white flowers with a black centre so work very well with monochrome designs.

5. Gladiloi

These flowers really make an impact and come in all different colours so there is bound to be a shade to match your wedding colour theme – or go crazy and have them all! They are large tall stems often a metre in height so really great for large vase arrangements to really make a statement. Again they are really great value for money which is always a plus – you can have twice as many!

Ranunculus – the perfect Spring wedding flower

My thoughts on this wonderfully versatile flower

Ranunculus are probably my favourite flower, although this changes regularly and if you ask me in September I’ll definitely say Dahlia. One of the things I love about them is that they are extremely versatile. They can be soft and feminine in peach and pale pink and with their layers of paper thin delicate petals can be reminiscent of a garden rose or a peony. For a bride who has her heart set on Peonies, Ranunculus can be used to create a similar soft romantic blousy look and work wonderfully in bridal bouquets. Peonies are extremely popular but have a very short season which depending on the weather will be between late April and July.

Ranunculus are a great spring wedding flower as they come in a wide variety of colours, from hot pink, vibrant yellows, oranges and reds and as I mentioned above they also come in whites, peaches and marshmallow pinks. So no matter which wedding colours you’ve chosen there will most likely be ranunculus in a shade suitable! They also work wonderfully with other spring treats like the Tulip, Freesia and Narcissi but also work equally well with classic romantic flowers such as Roses and Lisianthus.

Ranunculus season runs for quite a while but is predominantly Winter/Spring. They are truly at their best from January to March meaning they are a strong contender for a Spring wedding.

In my opinion there aren’t many flowers out there which come in quite such powerful colours – Ranunculus certainly can add a ‘zing’ and a ‘pow’ to arrangements!

They work well in buttonholes, corsages and as hair flowers as they hold up well out of water. See below for a pretty example of a wedding flower crown. Ranunculus work quite well in a variety of different wedding hairstyles as they will sit quite flat against your head as opposed to a large rose which will stick out.

I hope this gives some inspiration to you 2016 Spring brides and also to anyone who is just interested in reading about beautiful flowers!
